William Rayner/Raynor/Rainer - another Tasmanian pioneer

William Rayner was born 14 Feb 1767 at Long Alley, Spittlefield, Shoreditch, London, and died 14 Dec 1850, Barrack St., corner of Collins St., Hobartown, Tasmania. He was buried in the Friends Burial Ground. He came to Tasmania as a pardoned 2nd Fleet convict having served his sentence on Norfolk Island and subsequently served in the NSW Corps [recorded in PRO reel 1302, Muster of NSW Corps], 102 Foot Regiment and 73rd Regiment. He married twice - first to Elizabeth Goldsmith 19 Sep 1791 on Norfolk Island ["The Second Fleeters " by Michael Flynn and details supplied by Robyn Faye Mani-Williams, Page 294-295], and then to Susannah Jane Chapman 9 Nov 1809 in Newcastle [The Second Fleeters " by Michael Flynn and details supplied by Robyn Faye Mani-Williams, Page 491-492].
His children are:
William Rayner 1792-1862 m. Sophia Cullen 1815 St David's Hobart. 8 children
George Rayner 1794 - 1840 m. Mary Ann Pyers 1819 Tasmania. 7 children (I have photos of 3 of their sons)
Elizabeth 1810-1874 m. George Allen 1831 St Davids, Hobart. 12 children
Sarah 1814-1900 m. Thomas Kerr 1832
Unnamed b. & d. 1815 NSW
Isabella 1817-1872 m. William Nicholls 1835 Hobart, Tas. 6 children
Robert Chapman 1820-1875 m. Mary Kinsella, 1850 Geelong 2 children
Sophia 1822-1885 m. Thomas Green 1841 Hobart.
Susannah 1825 - m. Thomas Poole 1846
Archer 1833 -

On my mother's side I am his descendent through William and Sophia m. 1815. A daughter of Robert Chapman and Mary married my paternal grandmother's uncle so I have links in both of my parents' ancestry.

Elizabeth Rayner Correction

Thank you! I have two conflicting records from the Tas Archives Office, one saying she married George and one saying she married John. I have both names in our family history but just put the first (alphabetically) in the list. Anyone know how there come to be two names in the records?

Hi Shirley,

can you state what the two conflicting records are? If the records are online please include a link to the page where the information is recorded,

regards,
John Horton
